How to backup your WordPress website manually and using plugin

Also it is always recommended to backup your website before any maintenance like WordPress core, theme and plugins update. There are many ways to backup your WordPress site..

Backup your WordPress website manually

To backup your WordPress website manually you will need access to your website files and database.. you can access them through Cpanel or FTP + phpMyAdmin … both ways you will be able to find your public_html folder.

After you login to your Cpanel you should find file manager like below

Click on file manager and select your website if you have multiple websites shared on the same Cpanel.

Now should be at your WordPress website  file manager.


be sure you selected all the folders and files in the directory, The main WordPress core files (wp-admin, wp-content, wp-includes) and the rest of the files.

After that you will be able to download your  WordPress Website Backup zip file.

Next you have to backup your database. at the cPanel you will find Databases > phpMyAdmin

download should start automatically and you will get your database_name.sql file. Congratulation after following the previous steps you should have your Manual WordPress website backup completed ( and database_name.sql).

One of the best plugins you can use to backup your WordPress website is “UpdraftPlus” it is a free and great plugin. Allows you to backup your WordPress website on your server or on external storage like (Google Drive, Dropbox, etc..).. first you have to install and activate “UpdraftPlus” plugin then navigate to the settings page.

At the settings tab you can set the backup you want you do manual backup or schedule backup for files and database separately.

at the second section you can select where to save you WordPress backup file. after that you have to save settings. then you will get a popup to authenticate your external storage account. After you authenticate you account successfully.  Go to “Backup / Restore” tab then you can create your first Backup.
